Reflection Matters
In our hurried world, we often find our time is limited. Modern day conveniences that have made our lives easier seem to have freed up more time only to take on more. The challenges in Education that we face are not excluded from time-constraints. Rushing through content so students can take their next test so we can move onto the next topic is a mirror of the hurried approach in our 21st Century lives. The end result may (or may not) be a good test grade, but are students truly learning? How do we help our students to learn in ways that are meaningful to them? Most importantly, how do we help our students become critical thinkers with the ability to analyze, evaluate and communicate what they've learned.
In addition to checks for understanding, formative assessments can help to provide students with the opportunity to self-assess and reflect on their own learning. Reflection is a key piece in developing our students' higher order thinking skills. Taking the time for reflection in their own learning lays the foundation for doing so in other aspects of their lives and fosters a growth mindset.

Blogs & Digital Portfolios
Blogging is a great way to promote student reflection, online writing skills and a positive digital footprint. Reflective activities become interactive when students respond to yours or each other's posts.
Concept Maps
Concept maps help students to collect their thoughts then arrange them into connected categories and groups. Once organized, students may target specific areas in which to expand. This can be achieved individually or with a partner/small group.
